Highlights and Lowlights

We have been busy practicing finding numbers on our 100's charts and then finding one or two more or less than that number. The students used the Smartboard to circle the numbers on a giant 100's chart and then worked in partners to find the numbers with coloured game pieces. At centres today we also practiced showing numbers using 10-frames. After morning recess we had music!

For an art lesson today we looked again at the characters of "Joy" and "Sadness" from the movie "Inside Out". We saw a short clip about each unique character and then I showed the class a self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh. We learned that he expressed his emotions within his artwork. "Sunflowers" and "Two Women in the Peat" were two of his paintings that we also looked at:

One we associated with joyful emotions and contained bright cheerful colours; the other we associated with sadness and contained dark gloomy colours. Using oranges, blues and yellows like the artist, I demonstrated what happens when a dark colour (brown) is mixed in to add lowlights and and a bright colour (white) is mixed in to create highlights! The students then paired up to mix their own colour palettes and had fun experimenting with the paint. There were lots of self-portraits and some were mixing colours to make interesting shades of green, beige and peach!

Have a wonderful weekend!
