June 27 - Last Day of School Tomorrow

Good afternoon!

Wow, can you believe tomorrow is the last day of school? Time needs to slow down. You probably figured out I have sent a bunch of things home today, and will send some more tomorrow. There are many clothing items which will be on the tables in the hallway so when you drop off/pick up your son or daughter, please come through the front doors and have a look. There are many other things like lunch containers.

Today we said a few goodbyes. It was our last Reading Buddy time and we also said farewell to the Grade 6 students in an afternoon assembly. Today was Ethan's last day as he is flying out on vacation tomorrow morning, and we will miss him until September. And I just realized I forgot to take a last day of school picture!!! Sorry!

We hosted two classes of Kindergarteners! It was a lot of fun. At the end of the day we went outside to try to spell words with bubbles. I mentioned the bubble holder can be refilled so please do not throw it away!

Tomorrow:
Last day of school
Farewell Assembly at 8:30
Report Cards
Early Dismissal at 11:00

Have a great evening!

June 26

Good afternoon,

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend, and had time to enjoy the gorgeous weather! Speaking of weather, it looks like it will be another hot day tomorrow so please dress accordingly as most likely we will be outside for gym.

Today was a day of sharing and caring. Volunteer Ms. Jen had special cards for each student in our class, and I think Max had a hand in helping her choose special pins. A big THANK YOU from all of us! As a class we created a card for another one of our fabulous volunteers, Ms. Connie, who is not feeling very well. I know she felt a lot of love floating her way from our classroom when we all thought positive things and sent them to her. Get well soon, Connie!

Tomorrow we are going to host our Kindergarten children who will be moving into Grade 1 in September. I asked students to really think about what they wanted to know before Grade 1, and if they can share that information. This is a great opportunity for my students to show the "new kids" what Grade 1 is all about - learning and fun in a safe and respectful community!

As we wrap up the year, there is a lot that will be sent home. Please send a bag with your son or daughter so we can clear out drawers.

P.S. Did you have a look at all the pictures from Friday's blog?

Zoo!

Good afternoon!

Wow, what a fun day at the Calgary Zoo! From chatting with all the groups, it seems like students were able to see an animal from each group, except for fish! A big thank you to all our volunteers for supporting us today.

Please check for any library books, home reading books, etc to return to me!

Also, please send a bag, maybe a bag you use for shopping, so I can send home some things on Monday and Tuesday. Thanks!

June 22 - Zoo Tomorrow

Good afternoon!

Max shared his drum with us today, since his mom did yesterday! He drummed for us, let us hold it, and even sang a few notes from his favourite song. By the way, his drum stick is filled with a sock! Thank you Max!

Tomorrow is our field trip to the Calgary Zoo! We will be going rain or shine, so please dress appropriately. I talked with the kids about layering, bringing a hat, wearing sunscreen and comfortable shoes. I know I won't be wearing my heels or anything fancy. Dress for comfort as we will be walking a lot. Please send lunch with a snack, and a water bottle (students will not be able to make purchases at the concession). We will be leaving as soon as the bus arrives, so it is really important that everyone is on time. For my fabulous volunteers, thank you so much! If you can be here by 8:40 so we can organize groups, it would be appreciated. There is a form for you to fill out and sign before we head out.

Thank you and have a great evening!

June 21 - National Aboriginal Day

Good afternoon!

Today we honoured National Aboriginal Day through a number of learning activities (not to mention ones which were completed last week!).

We were fortunate to have Ms. Jen bring in her special drum. The drum had a butterfly which was painted in one form of traditional Aboriginal art. The drum was made from animal skin; ask your son or daughter which animal. She played her drum and we could feel vibrations in our bodies! Ms. Jen also talked about "smudging". We were able to smell what she uses to smudge. Students described the scents as "burned outdoor smell". It was a mixture of sage, cedar, and lavender; each represent a different characteristic. Sage - cleansing, lavender - beauty, and cedar - strength. We also learned that when you pick up feathers, you should ask nature for permission. Ms. Jen found eagle, hawk, and owl feathers while walking!
Ms. Jen and her drum.

A beautiful butterfly.

The drumming stick.

Cedar, lavender and sage to smudge/cleanse.

A very special feather!

This reminded me of the medicine wheel. The attachments are sinew!

Max is probably used to this!

Students were able to feel drum vibrations.
Max attends a drumming circle, too! One of his favourite songs is Earth's Heart Song. We loved it! It is very calming and students were singing it throughout the day. Here is a link to the song. I hope you enjoy the imagery.

Our clay animals are falling apart! This is the first time I have used clay so it was a learning experience for me. Fortunately we were gifted with special stones on which students were able to draw their animal.

Beavers can wear a bow in their fur! I agree with Tamika.

Arinanna's little snake. She used beautiful colours.

We made our own drums! We tried our best to play the same beat at the same time. Some of us also had time to create animal masks.

Ms. Paolini is asking for her overdue books! I will send emails to parents to have a look around the house.
