Fall Science Exploration

This is Ms. Frey posting again for Ms. Cokar. We had a fun day looking at leaves again and asking more questions such as "what happens to leaves after they fall?" Some students predicted that they would go back up in the tree and others said they would fly away in the wind and a few said they would die and crumble or go into the earth. All great predictions! We watched a short video about composting and then did our own leaf compost experiment with sandwich bags, leaves and coffee grounds. The clear bags can be observed over several months to see what will happen to the leaves!

We also looked at some seeds and guessed where they came from. They had come from a pumpkin and were roasted in the oven so we could use all our five senses to make observations. Some observations were that "they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside which tasted better" and that they tasted "spicy" and looked "big" and "smooth". We took a poll of who liked the taste and who didn't so we could compare numbers. Everyone decided to try them and we found that more students liked the pumpkin seeds then did not.

We also had a fire drill today and talked about safety such as walking quietly in a line and leaving behind items such as classroom materials and coats. We evaluated how the drill went and felt overall we did a good job.

  1. Sounds like a great week! I love the composting experiment! It's so interesting to be able to see what will happen.
