April 7

Good afternoon!

We have had a busy week!

In Social Studies, students have already learned about community and good citizenship. They also are all very aware of Pillars of Care. We learned this week about caring for community.

Combining Art, Language Arts and Social Studies, students listened to a story Star Blanket and created their own. Unfortunately the camera battery quit as I was standing on a stool getting everyone organized holding up their finished products. Here are some photographs of their work in progress from yesterday:

In Math, my students share they are confident with comparing and contrasting 2D and 3D shapes. Today we went for a walk inside the school searching for real life examples of 3D shapes. As we were detectives, we had our magnifying glasses and used cameras to find real life examples. Before we wandered around, students discussed the similarities (compare) and differences (contrast) between 2D and 3D shapes. For example, if you squished a sphere it could become a circle! Oh, and guess what? A rectangular prism has two square shaped sides and four rectangle shaped sides. In this first picture you will see the shapes we were hunting for and if you look closely you will see the two pyramids have different shaped bases. As students explored, I took pictures of what they thought were real life examples of the shapes they had in their hands.

Measurement is something we are starting. Students knew things to measure include how long or short something is, how short or tall a person is, how much something ways, and how far or near an object is to another. Also, super important...measuring ingredients when baking and cooking! John said there was a tool that you could use to help measure how tall something was. Yousif helped by sharing it was called a ruler. Since we did not have a ruler or a scale that weighed, students got creative. Please see below:
