April 7

Good afternoon!

We have had a busy week!

In Social Studies, students have already learned about community and good citizenship. They also are all very aware of Pillars of Care. We learned this week about caring for community.

Combining Art, Language Arts and Social Studies, students listened to a story Star Blanket and created their own. Unfortunately the camera battery quit as I was standing on a stool getting everyone organized holding up their finished products. Here are some photographs of their work in progress from yesterday:

In Math, my students share they are confident with comparing and contrasting 2D and 3D shapes. Today we went for a walk inside the school searching for real life examples of 3D shapes. As we were detectives, we had our magnifying glasses and used cameras to find real life examples. Before we wandered around, students discussed the similarities (compare) and differences (contrast) between 2D and 3D shapes. For example, if you squished a sphere it could become a circle! Oh, and guess what? A rectangular prism has two square shaped sides and four rectangle shaped sides. In this first picture you will see the shapes we were hunting for and if you look closely you will see the two pyramids have different shaped bases. As students explored, I took pictures of what they thought were real life examples of the shapes they had in their hands.

Measurement is something we are starting. Students knew things to measure include how long or short something is, how short or tall a person is, how much something ways, and how far or near an object is to another. Also, super important...measuring ingredients when baking and cooking! John said there was a tool that you could use to help measure how tall something was. Yousif helped by sharing it was called a ruler. Since we did not have a ruler or a scale that weighed, students got creative. Please see below:

April 5

Good afternoon!

Room 5 students are telling Ms. Cokar what to write!

In gym, Matty says we did centres. There was skipping, badminton, hula hoops, scoops, paddles with little chicks (not real chicks!).

In Math, Amy says we used the SmartBoard to play 3D shape games.

When we went to the library, some people could not sign out books because they forgot to return their library books! (Ms. Cokar says "Please check backpacks for late notices.")

Spider Man, Spider Man! The students are singing this song so I am thinking this is what they learned in Music.

The afternoon was spent with our amazing Artist in Residence, Mrs. Jennifer Stables. She shared with us the importance of the Medicine Wheel, and the four parts and what they represented. We already knew that the four parts represent North, East, South and West. Mrs. Stables wanted to see if we knew about nature and cycles, and it just happens we were talking about Spring so we knew exactly what she was talking about! Here is a brief glimpse of what we were able to accomplish today. Can you guess which two seasons we were creating?

There are a number of very important notices that were sent home today. Each student was asked to take the notices and place them in their home folders, yet a few ended up on the floor. As I do not have time to write down names on every single notice, I have no idea who is missing theirs.

Welcome Back

Good afternoon!

Yesterday, the first day back after Spring Break, went by so quickly. We were all surprised when we looked at the time and saw it was five minutes before the bell! Our learning yesterday included creating 3D shapes, which required fine motor skills and a heavy dose of patience. As we have learned about citizenship and community, the next step was introducing care in the community; specifically care for water, animals, air, and trees. What are some ways your family and you care for air, animals, trees and water?

Today we explored Spring and with our Spring Thinking Caps came up with:

Ally shared something VERY neat and interesting! Can you guess what this is? If you don't know, please ask your son or daughter. So cool!

Your son or daughter was to bring home a bright orange sheet before Spring Break. Our Artist in Residence, Mrs. Jennifer Stables, will be working on a project with us, starting TOMORROW, as we explore Shapes and Patterns, First Nations, and Seasons. We are needing a variety of natural materials to build something, and are in need of the following:

- small twigs
- red/orange/yellow leaves
- fresh or flowers that have been flat dried
- potpourri
- small shells
- wheat

Perhaps you can go for a walk around your area to find these things in nature! Thank you to Ally and Amy who have brought in a few things!

Today a notice was sent home about a Community Walk which is scheduled for next Wednesday, April 12. This is very important and the form must be returned as soon as possible in your child's home folder.

Thank you to my secret student who filled my bucket by making this for me, something I did not notice until after everyone left the room:

Your son or daughter may be sharing some sad news they learned today. We talked about it as a class and our friend knows that we are here to fill her bucket and support her in any way we can. We also talked about how sometimes her heart may be hurting on the inside, so we should be good friends and ask her if she needs a smile or hug. I am proud of my students showing their friend Care for Others.

Tomorrow is library book exchange!

Reminders/Important Dates:
