Good afternoon,
As you know, students have been exploring with non-standard measurement. Today they were able to measure with a ruler! It was exciting to hear them use language like "about" and "estimate" when measuring. Students got creative when measuring something that was longer than a standard classroom ruler. Ask your son or daughter how long this yellow ruler is, and where the edge of the ruler should be placed when measuring an object.
Even though only a couple students are participating in the Spelling Bee, we decided to try an "eyes closed (so they are not peeking at the word wall) sight word spelling". We did okay at this first try at spelling words without paper and pencil.
In the afternoon students generated questions they wanted to ask the Calgary Firefighters, after watching a short video starring Flint the dog. We then met with a few other classes in the gym where Firefighter Aziz presented fire safety information, and he even read a book to us! The Calgary Firefighters have provided each student with a fire safety booklet, which your son or daughter has taken home to work on. Do you have a fire escape plan at home? Oh! We found out star of the fire safety video, Flint the dog, lives with Firefighter Aziz! Here is a link to the video:
