This week we played an alphabet Name game which the students enjoyed. We stood in a circle and I started with letter A, the student next to me said B, the next said C, and so on. What was the catch? If a student said the letter that their name begins with, they had to sit down. It was a lot of fun, especially when one by one, the students sat down. When it got down to two, we ended up calling it a tie.
In math we learned that when we say 3 and 2 is 5 it means 3 + 2 = 5. We did some work on this concept with manipulatives (links, blocks, dinosaurs, etc), drawing objects in our math books, and trying to write number sentences.
Community is so important! Room 5 continues to discuss what it means to be a community at different levels. Today we started to talk about Calgary and what does our city have that makes it different from other cities.
Sight words! Why are they called "sight words"? Because these are words that are high frequency in stories we read and in sentences we write. We don't need to sound them out and try to recognize them automatically. This week we tried to find sight words in books we were reading, write them on the white board, find matching pairs, and even tracing the words on a friend's back for them to guess. Here are the words we have learned about so far: a, by, see, the, I, at, do, an, in, can. Here is a sneak peek to next week's words: so, no, one, be, me.
